Physical and Mental Health

Wellness isn’t just programming. It’s policy. It’s access. It’s advocacy

The Bellevue Alumnae Chapter advances physical and mental wellness as both a public health policy and a social justice imperative. We recognize that systemic inequities continue to shape health outcomes for African American families – from heart disease and hypertension to maternal health disparities and Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Addressing these realities requires awareness, education, prevention, collaboration, and advocacy.

Rooted in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s Physical and Mental Health programmatic thrust, our chapter promotes whole-person wellness – mind, body, and spirit – through culturally responsive programming, strategic partnerships, and civic engagement.

Our wellness initiatives center three interconnected pillars:

  • Physical Activity & Heart Health – through fitness challenges, blood pressure awareness efforts, participation in the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign, we promote cardiovascular education, preventative screenings, and active living.

  • Brain Health & Chronic Disease Prevention – we are strengthening our national engagement around Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, supporting brain health education, caregiver awareness and advocacy for resources that protect gaining populations. We also promote early detection and management strategies for hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.

  • Mental & Emotional Wellness – our workshops and symposiums create space to address anxiety, grief, trauma, caregiving stress, menopause transitions, and midlife health. By reducing stigma and connecting individuals to trusted resources, we affirm that mental health is essential health.

Our commitment is demonstrated through sustained outreach and participation in community-based health initiatives, including:

  • Active and ongoing partnerships with the City of Bellevue and Crossroads Mall to host the annual MLK Jr Health Fair, providing education and resource distribution to community members.

  • Hosting and supporting wellness forums focused on mental health, cardiovascular risks impacting women of color.

  • Amplifying awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and advocating for those impacted – both individuals living with the disease and the loved ones who carry the weight of caregiving.

For Bellevue Alumnae, wellness advocacy expands beyond programming into civic engagement. We recognize that access to healthcare, mental health services, caregiver resources, and preventative education is deeply connected to policy, funding, and community infrastructure.

Through informed advocacy, coalition building, and civic response to emerging health issues, we support equitable access to care and work to amplify voices in conversations that impact public health outcomes. Our approach reflects Delta’s longstanding commitment to social action – addressing root causes while empowering individuals to take proactive steps toward healthier lives.

We rise with purpose, knowing that true wellness demands both individual empowerment and equitable access. Across the lifespan, we advance awareness, expand education, and pursue lasting change – building a healthier, more just world together.
